Overwhelmed by Japan's northernmost city in winter ❄️ WAKKANAI
I spent some crazy and unbelievable hours walking the strange streets of Wakkanai, Japan in March, the midst of a harsh winter. Wakkanai is Japan's northernmost city, way up on the tip of Hokkaido - a mere 38 miles (!) from Siberia and with weather to match. First I wander the streets in the evening; I'm in the middle of town and there are hardly any cars. Just snow and the occasional other person. Lots of restaurants to choose from though, for some reason.
The next day I go explore the North Breakwater Dome on the edge of the brutally cold and snowy Sea of Japan. A sudden violent snowstorm throws me for a loop, but I have to hope that the experience wandering around a genuinely extreme place is worth the risk.

Wild winter train ride to Japan's extreme north ❄️ ASAHIKAWA → WAKKANAI
Переглядів 986День тому
Japan’s northernmost train line leads to Wakkanai in Hokkaido, on the edge of the wild, freezing Sea of Okhotsk. One day I rode JR’s astounding Soya Line in winter on a "Sarobetsu" train. On the way, I found a world of magical landscapes and picturesque, snow-buried train stations. The four-hour train ride begins in Asahikawa, goes through smaller places like Nayoro and Otoineppu, and even give...
Ramblin' around Japan's coldest city ❄️ ASAHIKAWA

I visited the city of Asahikawa in Hokkaido in the middle of winter. It's Japan's coldest city on average, and is the site of Japan's coldest-ever recorded temperature, -41ºC (-42ºF). I spent a couple hours (with several layers of clothes on!) wandering the streets of Asahikawa. In this video I investigate the Heiwa Shopping Street, Japan's first purpose-built pedestrian street; some side stree...
Stunning train ride through a secretive region ❄️ KUSHIRO → ASAHIKAWA

I rode the entirety of Japan's most remote train route. It goes north from Kushiro in eastern Hokkaido. The Senmo Line has some of Japan's least-used stations along it, and ends at the rough and tumble city of Abashiri on the Sea of Okhotsk. After that, I rode an Oyuki limited express on the Sekihoku Line through bigger mountains to Japan's coldest city, Asahikawa. On this six-hour odyssey, I s...
Winter in a city on the edge of Japan ❄️ KUSHIRO

Kushiro is in far eastern Hokkaidō, Japan on the Pacific Ocean. I wandered the streets of Kushiro one early winter morning, to find out what life is like in a frigid outpost where few people visit. I found the famous Nusamai Bridge, with its four statues, a river full of big sheets of ice, and snowy streets full of life and a kind of fatalistic, grim determination to overcome the conditions and...
Tough route destroys trains - but the views are spectacular ❄️ OZORA LTD EXP

The gorgeous Ozora limited express train runs from Sapporo to Kushiro in Hokkaido, Japan. I rode its entire length one sunny winter day. My route actually began in Otaru, where I took a local train on a stunning seaside ride in the snow to Sapporo. From there, the Ozora train goes through mountains and valleys and tunnels, winding around tight curves and plowing through snow. The line has been ...
Exploring a city that refuses to die ❄️ OTARU

With temperatures well below freezing, I walked the streets of Otaru, Japan in winter. Once Hokkaido's center of business and wealth, Otaru today is in the shadow of nearby booming Sapporo. But Otaru has its own identity, with its famous historic canal and warehouse area, the remnants of Hokkaido's oldest train line running through town, and some very hardy citizens. In this video I first wande...

I rode the JR Hakodate Main Line from Hakodate to Otaru in Hokkaido, Japan. Part of this train line will be discontinued when the new shinkansen to Sapporo opens in 2030. But the section from Oshamambe to Otaru, across the Oshima Peninsula through Kutchan, offers jaw-dropping scenery that you won't be able to see from the replacement bus (and definitely not from the shinkansen, which will mostl...
Braving the snowy charms of a northern Japanese city ❄️ HAKODATE

Here's my look at the streets and neighborhoods of Hakodate, Japan in winter. One dark evening, and then the next day, I walked the icy sidewalks, then rode trams, to see what Hokkaido's third-biggest city is like in the middle of winter. Answer: cold but vibrant. And there's a phenomenally great way to stay warm built right into one of the street corners. Bliss. 🚠 NOTE: I keep saying "cable ca...
Bullet train to Hokkaido in winter ❄️ HAYABUSA SHINKANSEN

I traveled 832 train miles from Osaka to Hakodate, Japan using two separate shinkansen bullet trains. No shinkansen links the cities directly, so I took the Tokaido train to Tokyo, then changed to the amazing Hayabusa train. The Hayabusa shinkansen, introduced in 2011, leaves Tokyo and goes north through the Tohoku region. It was extended through the Seikan Tunnel, the world's longest undersea ...

I spent a day exploring the Nankai Kada Line in Wakayama, Japan. This short spur line runs between Wakayama-shi and Kada stations on a somewhat dingy, rural part of coastal Wakayama. The Kada line has been re-imagined in recent years as a "sakana" (fish) line, with decorations inside and outside the trains to match. Besides that, the cars have different colors and names, and a back story explai...

I went to Wakayama, Japan and wandered around Wakayama Castle (c. 1580s) and its associated park. The area is full of gorgeous little paths under the trees and beside ponds, where koi fish and ducks swim around and quaint wooden bridges span reconstructed stone moats full of green water. And of course you can go into the castle itself, as well. I paid the entrance fee and stepped inside. There ...

Say Amtrak and profitable in the same sentences hilarious. They have three how to 37 routes that are profitable. Amtrak has been lost money for the past 50 years and still lives off of taxpayer dollars. It is a massive boondoggle for that light rail advocates want to bring to the entire country.

ONLY if you have a problem driving! For a fraction of cost, drive a while, spend a night in a 5 Star hotel and drive the rest of the way the next morning, still getting to your destination earlier. Crazy, but if you have a problem where you can't drive...hell, put your car on a truck and fly ...much cheaper and easier. Crazy I say, crazy. Amtrak...one step above third class in the third world.

Traveled this route in coach many times with the kids. It’s worth it to eat in the dining car once, the steak is great. Bring a dorm kettle and some hot chocolate, tea, oatmeal packets, etc. to use on the view car, there are outlets at the tables. Baby pool inflatables can help make the seats more comfortable. We had a suitcase dedicated to pillows & blankets. Thanks for the nostalgia.

Little rock, no ty, Memphis, no ty. We have our own Detroit right here. Atlanta no, Cleveland heck no. Interestingly enough, you have a higher chance of dying on a train than a plane. However, I can survive easier from a train wreck than a plane crash, especially if I end up over water ect. Both are nice, but train lets you take in sights more, so it would make sense to do a train for a slower setting. Plus I would probably be able to gather food/remains easier from a train wreck compared to a plain crash.

It's the place where my parents first met each other so I was curious to see it all and it made me smile inside & out and because of it, I've been a fan of yours ever since. I love your style, the way you present videos/locations etc. There's far too many "gimmicky" UA-camrs out there doing crazy, borderline illegal, activities just to get views.
